The Ski School for the Blind St.Moritz

„On the left ski, Attention bump, and on the right ski", the instructions to Kelvin are forward-looking and show the way.

His family doesn't ski anymore. That's why he is with many other children in the Blind Ski School Camp. The Ski Camp is one of the offers of the first Swiss Blind Ski School.

In cooperation with the Ticino group for the blind and visually impaired, the ski school began in 1981 with the training of ski lessons for the blind and visually impaired. The school was a novelty on the Swiss winter sports scene which inspired other ski resorts to follow suit.

Instructors learn blindly

As individual as the students of the blind school are, so varied is the training of the instructors. „We ski ourselves with simulation goggles or blind, to be prepared for all situations“, says Claudia Blaser, responsible of the St. Moritz Blind Ski School. Special emphasis in the training of the instructors is on the safety of the learners on the slopes and the clear commands. Also practising with or without radio is trained.

The instructors have also made it possible for the blind and visually impaired to explore the Upper Engadine ski areas for over 30 years.  For a winter sports area for everyone.

From children's ski camp to competition preperation

Today, 28 specially trained ski instructors teach people who are blind or visually impaired at the Skischool St. Moritz. Benefit from this visionary offer for all ages; The youngest child in the blind ski school being just 4 years old and the oldest student 72.

The offer (see offers below), in which there is something for everyone, is also coordinated: From the first snow experiences to the professional level.
